Cake artist, Carrie Ventresca, makes the most amazing creations in her Mansfield store, Iced Cake Designs. Iced Cake Designs is located at 189 Marion Avenue in the building that was formerly, The Upper Crust.

When I have watched the aforementioned TV programs, I've wondered if the cakes taste as good as they look. In the case of Iced Cake Designs, the form and function are equal partners. They not only look beautiful but the taste is fabulous. I have enjoyed her chocolate cake truffles on more than one occasion and scrumptiously delicious does not begin to define the rich chocolaty goodness of them.

It's been a while since I've blogged but life has taken some interesting twists and turns over the past several months. I've been pondering the format of the blog and whether or not it has been effective in reaching our community. There are some other really great forums for finding out about events in the area. Perhaps Rediscovering needs to take another course.

I checked out their booth at Art Around The Block and the quality was phenomenal. I wish I could have them design my entire house.

It was a great weekend here in sunny Mansfield. I hope everyone had a good one.I checked out Art Around The Block/North End Community Festival on Saturday. Unfortunately, I forgot my camera (oops!) so you'll have to take my word for it (and enjoy a photo that has absolutely nothing to do with the festival).

A street festival vibe was definitely in the air, the weather was perfect and the art and music was outstanding. I am continually in awe of all of the area talent. I came home with a bracelet and a beautiful piece of pottery by Kim Quick of Park Street Pottery. Oh... and I almost forgot to mention the sinfully delicious "Cheese on a Stick" from a street vendor. If you missed it this year, make a note to attend next year.

1. As if you can't already tell, this week's top obsession is photographing public art work and cool architecture in the area. Be sure to send in your pics or suggestions for public art work.

2. Jeff Bell and the Northern Junkyard Orchestra performed at Martini's on Main last Saturday. Not only is Jeff's music amazing but there is all this great talent within the group. He, truly, allows each person the freedom to shine. Kate Westfall and Waylon Crase each gave solo performances while the other players, Tracy McAdams and Cody Knoll, mixed it up on some of the songs by playing different instruments. One of the highlights, for me, was an awesome percussion jam session. Keep watching the blog as I will post up-coming dates for Jeff, Kate and others. If you've never seen them, you're in for a treat.

Mansfield's Betty Nickell releases new album

Last August, as one of my first writing assignments, I was asked to interview Betty Nickell upon her induction into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. It was quite an honor for her to be recognized for her contributions. I stated in the original News Journal article that she was taken aback by the sudden attention to music she had recorded many years before. I think she still is.

The local singer/songwriter had several bands that played in the Mansfield area including Bett's Rockets, Betty Nickell and the Dukes and Betty Nickell and the Mystics. I was unfamiliar with her work but knew the music of many of her contemporaries i.e. Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash. Perhaps the reason for my ignorance was because in 1978, she walked away from her honky tonk days to take on another chapter of her life. Betty became a Christian. From that time on, she only played music in church.

When I met Betty, it became apparent that she has a genuine love for God and her life goal is to glorify God. It was important to her that her faith -her story - was told through the article. I was able to touch on it but I keep hoping that (someday) she will write her story in full.

At that time, Betty had penned seven songs for a new album. It would be her first recording in decades. She brought her guitar to the interview and played a couple of them for me. I have to tell you - although I don't share her rock solid faith - she left me with goosebumps.

We kept in touch for a while but things got a little hectic for both of us as late autumn approached. Recently, I was checking out local music on My Space and there was Betty Nickell. She's completed her gospel CD entitled A Time To Witness. http://www.myspace.com/bettynickell

It was amazing to hear those same songs that she played for me recorded with a full band. Still true to her musical roots, she has found a way to successfully fuse Rockabilly sound with Gospel lyrics.

I called her today to get an update on what she's been up to since we last spoke and she's had a big year. Following the induction and subsequent article, she not only has recorded her CD but has performed on a Christian television program out of Canton,Ohio. Her music is now being broadcast worldwide. It seems that her induction has catapulted her into a whole new career in music ministry.

As many of you know, I am a big fan of organic gardening and local farmer's markets. It's important to know where our food comes from...to have a connection with it. So what do you do with the surplus? One of my favorite resources, Our Ohio, has the answers: can it, freeze it or dry it.

I used to think of putting up vegetables as something that only country people or grandma's did. I can remember sitting on the porch with my grandma shucking corn and shelling peas. It was laborious but when we ate the corn at Christmas and it tasted as though it just came off the ear, the work was worth it.

Now urban farming is becoming quite popular with some people even raising chickens and goats in their backyards. New community gardens are sprouting up all over the country in abandoned lots and parks. In other words, it's now cool to be a farmer.

Did I mention that growing your own food is a lot of fun but also saves a fortune on the grocery bill? For the last couple of years, we have not spent more than $40 on our garden but have harvested hundreds of dollars in food. Our garden is not a large one. It's only about 10' x 15'. We use successive planting to get the most from it and we grow mostly foods that are expensive to purchase. For example: tomatoes are expensive to buy, particularly in the winter months and don't take up a lot of space in the garden. Potatoes, on the other hand, take up a lot more space and can be purchased inexpensively. We don't grow them.

If you think it's too late to get started on a garden of your own then scope out some of the local farmers markets. You can find a lot of great deals on food grown right here in mid-Ohio. You can still learn to preserve food and enjoy the bounty throughout the year. At the markets, you can speak with the people who grow your food, get to know them and possibly arrange to visit a farm to see how your food is produced.

Connection to the earth, to your food and to your community. It's worth it.

S. Main Street's Treasure & Tea recieved a great mention on the blog, Chippy-Shabby. There are some other great pictures posted on the website so follow the link or click on the pics.

I apologize in advance but I cannot find an address or telephone number for the shop either online or in the phone book. It's located near the intersection of S. This Sunday, Jamison Well Drilling and Pump Services of Mansfield and Columbus Worthington Air will demonstrate how Geothermal systems work for home and business. 3. Alan Wigton's new book, Two Sons - The Bowland-Barker Murder.

Alan will be having a book signing at Main Street Books on July 2nd from 5:30 -7:30 during First Friday.

1. I love, love, love the recent addition of the Arts & Culture Calendar to the library's web site. To find it go to the library's main page and you'll see the above image on the upper right side of the page or you can click the image above.

2. Living Mansfield will be at Central Park on Sunday from 2:00 - 5:00 recreating over 30 character's from Mansfield history. It's a self-guided tour so you can pick up a brochure and make your way around the park. The event is free but keep in mind that your donation benefits local historical societies and helps events like this to continue.

3. My "Go Local" column in She Is magazine featured Michele Hyman of Mimi's Magic Mania. Michele works with the most colorful,vibrant fabrics. It has been such a pleasure to get to know her and her work. Be sure to click the link to her website and check it out. It's amazing. By the way, She Is is a great local magazine for women. It's filled with lots of information and inspiration from local contributor's. I particularly enjoyed Lisa Miller's column, Pop Watch.

4. Fresh local produce
This is organic lettuce that we grew. If you don't have a green thumb, you can get your fill of local veggies from local farmer's markets. They are sprouting up all over the area. Here are a few:

Tuesdays at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on Lex Ave. from 4-7 pm.
Fridays in front of the Carrousel from 9 am - 2 pm.
Saturday's at Alta Greenhouse from 2-5 pm.

5. Local Music

This obsession started at the Mansfield Art Center's Multi-Media Art Explosion. I had no idea that Mansfield had so much talent. I work in the evening's so I don't get to attend a lot of events so I was just blown away to see so much energy and talent all in one venue. Speaking of venues....have you been voting for Project Walnut online???

Farmer's Market Starting at Holy Trinity Church

I love that the buy local movement is taking Mansfield by storm. There are more places than ever to purchase local produce and today's News Journal article will tell you about a new farmer's market location. (Just click on the highlighted words.)

By making these types of purchases, you are supporting local farmers and helping the environment by purchasing food that hasn't been transported halfway around the world to get to your table. It's a win-win.
